The Tax Assessor is one of the four statutory officers each municipality in New Jersey must have.
The Tax Assessor's Office is responsible for inspecting and placing a value on the property. This value is used in calculating property taxation.
Other responsibilities of the Tax Assessor include inspecting farms to determine if farmland assessment is appropriate, determining eligibility for property exemptions/deductions for seniors, disabled persons, veterans and non-profit groups. The Assessor assesses property values for The Council on Affordable Housing and the Green Acres programs. Inspecting and assessing new construction, defending tax appeals and overseeing municipal revaluations are also the Assessor's duties. The Assessor maintains property records and other required documents within the Assessor's Office.
Property owners who wish to appeal their property assessment are required to file an appeal by April 1st of each year with either the Atlantic County Board of Taxation or the Tax Court of New Jersey.
